Upcoming Event: Colin Doyle Live in Rutherford

By Jennifer Ersalesi

Growing up in Jersey with a family with a great sense of humor, Colin Doyle learned how to appreciate humor and that he had the ability to make laugh at a young age. While he was in college, he started doing stand-up comedy and discovered just how much he enjoyed it. He is coming back to his hometown of Rutherford on May 28th to share his talent at the Williams Center of Rutherford on May 28th. This is Rutherford interviewed Colin to learn more about this upcoming show.

TIR: When did you start doing Stand Up Comedy?

Colin Doyle: I started Nov 1, 2023 in Morgantown, WV while still a student at West Virginia University. I began a humor magazine club and put together a comedy show on a campus venue. Then shortly after, I started frequently organizing my own reoccurring shows at bars. Every other Monday night. The frequency of stage time, longer sets and big crowds early on in my career set a standard of excellence for myself and provided me with the confidence needed to foresee a future in this art form.

TIR: What do you enjoy most about doing Stand Up Comedy?

CD: I really enjoy organizing these events, producing and promoting it to those family and friends around me and bringing people together to enjoy an entertaining show. I am in control of every facet of the show from handing out flyers to obviously performing an hour long set. I’ve always had the “if not me then who” mentality and take pride in my work and my ability to perform and make others laugh. That mentality scales down to being funny during one on one conversations, up to doing a show at a theatre.

TIR: You will be performing at the Williams Center in your hometown this week.  How do you feel about coming "home" to perform?

CD: I’m grateful for the opportunity and those who helped me do so. I’m lucky enough to have connections to many people in town and am very excited to bring everyone together to have a laugh.

TIR: What and/or who inspires your material?

CD: My family and friends. Growing up in NJ you learn how to adapt and more so keep up with the funniest person in the room. Being funny is a social muscle that gets flexed nonstop in Jersey. I think I grew up idolizing my uncles and dad for being the funniest in the room or my mom for coming from a long line of people who “light up a room”. I believe it to be admirable because laughter leaves a lasting positive impact on many.

TIR: What else would you like to tell us about your upcoming show?

CD: Nothing much. Thursday May 28th at 8 pm. I’ll be performing an hour long set alongside a few opening acts from NYC comedians. Since graduating last May, I’ve been performing at clubs in the city and have really grown as a comic and met very talented comedians so having my peers together with me in this endeavor is a great support system.

Also, the Williams Center is a facet of town that should be frequented by all. The renovations they have made in the past few years are amazing, the venue is historic, fascinating and inviting.
