This is Rutherford FC Soccer

By Jennifer Ersalesi

Rutherford FC is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting its soccer players learn about sportsmanship while developing their skills. The coaches, parents, and players all work together to make this organization thrive and grow. This is Rutherford spoke to Michael McCaugherty, Rutherford FC Board member, and Chuck Olivo, Rutherford FC President to learn more about this non-profit organization. TIR also received feedback from many of the young players and their families.

TIR: Tell us about your roles within this organization.

Mike McCaugherty: Of course, Rutherford FC is comprised of volunteers and parent/guardian coaches. The board is currently made up of the following members:

Chuck Olivo

Mike Szalkiewicz

Wayne Seaman

Ray Dominguez

Michael McCaugherty

Dan Gino

Erin Ersalesi

TIR: What drew you to being a part of this organization?

Chuck Olivo: I’ve loved soccer since I was a little kid and really vibe with Ronaldinho’s quote “I learned all about life with a ball at my feet.”  When the opportunity presented itself to start as the Director of Training in 2022, I jumped at it.  The goal from that point on was to help the club strive for the highest level of sportsmanship, performance and passion for the game of soccer.  And to dedicate to great skill and beauty in the way we play.  I think this game has so many lessons to teach us – players, parents, and most of all coaches.  Watching kids get better and better as the season progresses, there’s nothing better than that.  And I love learning from the players, we have some wonderful players throughout this program.  I love being around all of it.

TIR: How is Rutherford FC Soccer unique?

CO: Rutherford FC is unique because it is a club team that is not affiliated with local recreation soccer. We host games locally and also travel for away games.

Our program is augmented by professional trainers that work with our players in strategic skills and player development twice a week, plus games.

Our players and coaches are committed, participating in both the fall and spring seasons. The program includes various tournaments and a New Jersey youth soccer cup.

The program is supported by professional referees and overseen by the New Jersey Youth Soccer Program, which has strict adherence for player development and accountability. As well as professional, courteous rules for play.

“I love playing for Rutherford FC because it is such a positive environment and it feels like a second family, " explained Keira Cokeley.

“Our daughter has grown as a leader and teammate. She hasn’t just developed as a natural competitor and athlete, but has built strong values as a captain and force on and off the pitch. FC is an extension of our Rutherford community. She has maintained and built long-lasting friendships. Her coaches are mentors for life. Although she plays on more competitive club teams, playing for Rutherford FC has given her the confidence to try new things, build her strengths and work on her game," Carissa Cokeley, RFC Mom told TIR.

Keira's father and RFC coach explained, “I’ve personally had the privilege to coach my child since she started playing for Rutherford FC. I’ve watched her blossom into one of the most formidable players in our club, helping us win a NCSA Cup, our flight a few years ago and achieve promotion to Flight A over the course of our time together. In addition to those accomplishments as a player, I have watched her grow into a confident person, a kind sportswoman and an incredible leader both on and off the pitch. There’s a reason we call it the beautiful game and it’s not just because of the sport itself."

Jenna Millar, mother of Jack, Nick and Owen Millar and wife of Coach Mike Millar said, "My children have been obsessed with soccer since they could walk. Being part of the RFC. Community and having their dad as their coach makes all the difference! Their growth and love for soccer shines bright at RFC."

TIR: How and when can families register their children for Rutherford FC Soccer teams?

Players can register for individual seasons; however, it is highly suggested or recommended to register for the full season, which begins in September.

"My child benefits from playing FC soccer because it prepares him for the next level, especially high school soccer. They’re not just improving their technical skills, but also learning how to work as part of a team, communicate with others, and stay disciplined. The experience helps build confidence, resilience, and a strong work ethic—both on and off the field," Liam's mom, Katie Barone, explained.

TIR: When do Rutherford FC soccer teams practice and play their games?

CO: Practice is typically Monday through Friday, with weekends reserved for games.

Practice is held locally throughout many of the Rutherford facilities and overlaps extending to nearby Lyndhurst, New Jersey.  Practices are after school and end at times appropriate for that particular age group.

Games can vary. Some games are held locally here in Rutherford at our home fields, while others, such as away games, are held throughout northern New Jersey. Many of the away games are under 30 minutes from Rutherford. It's a great way to see other towns and experience their fan base and facilities. All are extremely welcoming as with Rutherford.

TIR: Will Rutherford FC be doing anything special to celebrate the upcoming World Cup games?

MM: Yes, 100%. Rutherford FC is extremely excited to welcome the world of soccer to our backyard. In doing so, we will be hosting a series of events from watch parties to tournaments. We are hosting a 3v3 Street Cup tournament on June 17th during "Dining Out Rutherford".  Although the tournament is for Rutherford FC registered players only we invite and welcome everyone to watch and even participate in some of the activities in our dedicated spectator areas.

"What I enjoy most about playing on Rutherford FC is that I get to be with a group of girls that I can be myself around and can have fun with. I also enjoy playing soccer for my town and for the amazing coaches that are involved with it. Being chosen as a captain for this team has been an amazing opportunity to me to be a leader for everyone. Growing up on this team has shaped me into the player I am today. I am so grateful that my coaches have believed in me every step of the way, also including my parents who never gave up on me. Playing every game with these girls, winning or losing, has showed me my passion for this sport and the team we are together," explained Francesca Dininno.

Francesca's father, Michal Dininno, told TIR, "Watching our daughter, Francesca, grow through her journey with Rutherford FC has been incredibly rewarding. Growing up in Rutherford, New Jersey, Francesca’s love for soccer quickly turned into passion. Through Rutherford FC, she has become a focused player, a confident leader, and a dedicated teammate, building strong friendships along the way. Balancing club level soccer with Rutherford FC has strengthened her discipline and maturity, helping her grow both on and off the field. She has learned not only to lead, but also to learn from and be inspired by her teammates. We are truly grateful to her mentors, her coaches have helped her grow into a great player, a leader, and a human being. As proud residents of Rutherford, we deeply appreciate all that Rutherford FC has given her."

"Rutherford FC has played a big role in my daughter Francesca's growth as both a player and a person. While she also competes at the club level, playing for her hometown gives her a strong sense of pride and connection to the game. She has grown more confident, disciplined, and positive. Balancing both levels has helped her mature and value teamwork and commitment. We’re grateful for her coaches and trainers, whose dedication and belief in her potential continue to inspire her," Francesca's mother, Antonella Dininno explained.
