Rutherford has reinstated the Ramadan Crescent Lighting after two years since 2024. The lighting stands as a symbol for the month of Ramadan and the values the month celebrates, such as self-reflection, charity, compassion, forgiveness, and self-discipline. It is a time where Muslims in our town fast from pre-sunrise to sunset.

The Ramadan Farewell event in conjunction with the lighting will occur at the Rutherford Public Library Plaza on Thursday, March 19th, the day Ramadan ends. The brief ceremony will feature speeches from townspeople and Council members, as well as county officials and Eid Committee officials present. There will also be cotton candy and waffle vendors, too.
The ceremony celebrates the reinstatement of Crescent just a week before the end of the month of Ramadan, and serves to show gratitude to the Mayor & Council as well as honor the leaders in all other towns across Bergen County and the state, as this year, there have been more than 70 Crescent Lightings, including one at the Governor’s Mansion and one in New York City.
