This year, Pierrepont School will present "Finding Nemo". The Directors (Mr. Matthew Vaccaro, Ms. Jacki Mann, and Ms. Briane Bilbao), the Musical Director (Ms. Aaliyah Jordan), and the fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students have worked hard to prepare this musical and are very excited for audiences to see the performances. This is Rutherford interviewed two of the Directors of the show, Pierrepont School teachers, Mrs. Jacki Mann, and Mr. Matthew Vaccaro to learn about the show.
TIR: Since so many people are familiar with the movie Finding Nemo, what can you tell us about this stage adaptation?
Ms. Jacki Mann: This stage adaptation brings the heartwarming journey of Finding Nemo to life through music, dance, and vibrant storytelling. While many know the story of Marlin and Nemo's adventure across the ocean to reunite, this version dives even deeper into the themes of friendship, family, and growing up. Our cast of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders brings the ocean to life—from lobsters to sharks—showing just how diverse and magical the sea can be!
Mr. Matthew Vaccaro: The stage version of Finding Nemo was initially adapted for a 30-minute show at Disney World’s Animal Kingdom. After quickly becoming a fan favorite, MTI purchased the rights and created an hour-long show expanding on the music and the story for schools and theater camps to perform. The stage version does an excellent job of taking iconic scenes and lines and creating a beautiful and emotional story. I think any fan of the movie will enjoy this heartwarming show.
TIR: How many students are involved in this year’s production?
JM: We’re thrilled to share that 51 students have been cast in this year’s show, with an additional 4 serving as our essential behind-the-scenes stage crew. It’s one of our larger and most enthusiastic groups yet!
TIR: How long have you been working on this production?
JM: Our journey began back in October when students received their scripts, giving them ample time to get to know their characters. We began blocking and choreography in February, and the excitement has been building ever since!
MV: We started working on this show in October. We start this early because all of the Directors are also working on other shows throughout the year. Ms. Bilbao and Ms. Jordan, with help from Ms. Mann, worked on the Union School show while working on this one. I also worked on the High School show while working on the Pierrepont show.
It is an amazing collaborative team that truly brings out the best in our students and allows them to showcase their talents at a high level.
TIR: What can you tell us about the behind-the-scenes operations, such as set building and costumes?
JM: We’re incredibly lucky to have a talented and resourceful creative team. Planning started as early as last year, and our vision truly came to life with help from the entire Rutherford community. Special thanks go to Mrs. Edmunds and Mrs. Del Rey, who turned pool noodles and foam insulation into a stunning coral reef. We even used the Rutherford Facebook page to find a tricycle for the show—thank you, Mr. Weiss, for answering the call!
MV: Ms. Bilao and Ms. Mann started developing ideas for the coral in July 2024. From there, it took an incredible effort by this team to get all the parts together to build this set. Most importantly, though, it was the help of Mrs. Edmunds and Mrs. Del Ray, who volunteered their time and spent day after day painting and creating the beautiful scenes you will see on the stage. They also put some hidden magic into the show, which audiences will love.
TIR: What are you most excited for audiences to see?
JM: We can’t wait for audiences to see the magic come alive on stage. These students have dedicated countless hours to learning lines, music, and choreography while balancing schoolwork and other activities. Watching it all come together is the most rewarding part—and we couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve accomplished!
MV: I am primarily excited for audiences to see the incredible talent of these kids. They have all worked hard to train their voices and learn their choreography from Ms. Jordan, memorize their lines and jobs on and off stage, and bring this story to life. This show will make kids laugh, parents tear up, and every audience member cheer and smile. We are so excited for everyone to experience it.
