Pedals for Progress

By Jennifer Ersalesi

This year the Junior Woman’s Club of Rutherford will be sponsoring a collection for Pedals for Progress/ Sewing Peace. On October 19th, community members can donate used bicycles and sewing machines at the Woman’s Club of Rutherford on 201 Fairview Avenue in Rutherford from 12 pm until 3 pm (rain or shine).

Adult and children’s bikes that are in repairable condition can be donated to this worthy cause. Bikes that are disassembled or rusted cannot be accepted. Working portable sewing machines and sewing notions (no fabric donations) will also be accepted. Pedals for Progress also collects wrenches for overseas shops.

Pedals for Progress collects bicycles that are reconditioned by partner agencies and distributed at low cost to poor working adults, as well as children. Bicycles are shipped to developing countries in Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe. The bicycles that are delivered to these areas are used for commuting to work, transporting products to markets, etc.

Sewing Peace collects sewing machines that are shipped to different countries and are used to help people generate income opportunities and for educational programs. Struggling communities benefit greatly from the steady employment these sewing machines can provide.

Since it costs $45 to collect, process, ship, rebuild and distribute each bicycle, those who bring bicycles and/or sewing machines are asked to donate $10 per item. All donations are fully tax deductible and a receipt will be provided.

Pedals for Progress/ Sewing Peace is a 501c (3) corporation and a registered charity i the states of NJ, NY, PA, CT and VT. For more information, see www.p4p.org.
