September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and there’s no better time to join Rutherford Public Library. All Rutherford residents are eligible for a free library card. To open an account, simply visit the library at 150 Park Avenue with proof of Rutherford residency or begin the process online. Patrons who apply online must visit the library within thirty days to pick up their physical card. Students in the Rutherford Public Schools typically visit the library in grades K-3, but parents are welcome to apply for cards on their children’s behalf at any time.

This month is a particularly great time to register for a library card. Adults who open an account by September 30 are eligible to receive 50% off admission to the New Jersey Hall of Fame at American Dream, which can be redeemed through November 30. New library cardholders will be given a promo code when they stop by the front desk.

“We are so appreciative of the Hall of Fame’s generosity and recognition of the importance of libraries,” says RPL Director Gretchen Corsillo. “It’s never a bad time to sign up for a library card, but we’re excited to offer this extra incentive during September.”

Rutherford Library cardholders receive a slew of benefits, including borrowing privileges at all 78 BCCLS library locations. This means patrons are not just limited to items owned by RPL. They may visit other libraries or request items be sent to Rutherford, which usually takes only a few days.

In addition to its collection of physical books, movies, music, and magazines, RPL also has two apps, Libby and Hoopla, which cardholders can use to download free e-books, audiobooks, and magazines, or stream music and videos. Other perks of having a card include access to the library’s popular museum pass program, which provides free admission to many local and regional museums; online resources including digital newspapers, genealogy tools, foreign language learning, and more; and a brand new selection of fun and useful household items from the Library of Things. The library also offers year-round events for all ages.
