Every year the Future Business Leaders of America and Future Teachers of America hold a Bear Drive and deliver the bears to a school in Jersey City in December. This is Rutherford spoke with Cheryl Bott-Melfa, RHS Business teacher, about this year's Bear Drive.
TIR: Who donates the bears?
Cheryl Bott-Melfa: The students, faculty, and staff donate the bears. We use the money raised by FBLA and FTA to purchase the remaining bears.
TIR: How many bears were delivered this year? Where were they delivered?
CBM: We delivered approximately 150 bears this year to a preschool in Jersey City.
TIR: What do you and your students find most rewarding about this experience?
CBM: For me, it's the interaction of our students with Pre-K students. You definitely see a different side of our kids, in a very sweet and positive way. It brings me great peace and happiness that we are able to provide these bears because for some, it's the only gift they will receive. It makes me thankful for what we have here.
